专业概况
在这里学什么?The Master of Arts in Economics is a flexible degree that can meet a wide range of student needs. The program allows students to pursue a traditional approach as preparation for entry into a doctoral program or an applied approach geared toward business and policy analysis in a specialized area.
Students who have chosen to continue their graduate training have successfully completed Ph.D. programs at prestigious universities across the nation. Other graduates have become economics teachers, primarily at the community College level. Some have gone to research and analysis positions in governmental agencies and private business firms. Still others have chosen to pursue careers in general business management.
All students in the program are trained in economic theory and research methods, and take several courses emphasizing business or government policy analysis in chosen specialty areas. An independent research program is required, permitting students to apply theory and empirical techniques to real world problems.
The Department of Economics also encourages interdisciplinary training. The masters program can be adapted for students desiring a diverse background by combining economics with graduate courses in sociology, political science, computer science, statistics, modeling and simulation, finance, marketing research, or public administration. The Economics Department is especially strong in international economics and econometrics. The department is the home of the Old Dominion University Economic Forecasting Project, which generates economic forecasts and commentary about the region, state, and nation.
Classes are offered at times to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. Courses are offered in the late afternoon or evening at the main campus in Norfolk.
Classes & Requirements
Comprehensive Examinations
All master's candidates must pass four written comprehensive examinations covering Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Econometrics I, and one elective area selected by the student. After completion of the core courses and at least one elective course, the student can take the comprehensive exams. The exams are offered at the end of each semester - Fall, Spring, and Summer. Students generally take the exams after completing all of their core courses, usually at the end of the summer of their first year.
Master's Research Project
Students conduct an independent research project under the guidance of a member of the economics graduate faculty. The objective is to gain experience in applying economic theory and empirical techniques to real world problems.
Near the completion of their formal course work, candidates engage in their research projects under the thesis or non-thesis options. Most students choose the non-thesis option. Students who choose the research paper non-thesis option register for ECON 697 and ECON 698 in the last two semesters of coursework (three credits each).
Students who choose the thesis option should register for ECON 699 in the final semester. Six hours of credit are given for this course. The thesis is guided by and approved by a committee of at least three members of the department. Detailed instructions, requirements, and deadlines are contained in the guide for Preparation of Theses and Dissertations, available from the Office of the University Registrar.
