专业概况

Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at CSUB! Our program is comprehensive, where you will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the fascinating world of the Spanish-speaking countries and people. In our program, you will explore and learn about linguistics, literature, culture, history, and society in Spain and Spanish America. We offer courses geared towards acquiring or further developing your Spanish or French language skills, as well as courses in the upper-division level where you will be analyzing, thinking critically, expressing your views, and deepening your knowledge about the Spanish-speaking world or francophone world, all in the target language.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at CSUB prepares students to interact and succeed in an increasingly global world. Cultural understanding and second language skills offer distinct advantages to graduates, particularly at a time when cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity in society is rapidly increasing. The department offers B.A. and M.A. degrees in Spanish, minors in Spanish and French, and a California Single Subject Credential in Spanish. A Special Major in French is available to interested students.

Program Goals & Objectives

Goals of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures are to foster a broader linguistic, literary and cultural understanding of global societies, equip students with skills that are necessary in career fields, and prepare teachers of modern languages with the necessary knowledge and skills for teaching languages and cultures to others. These goals are accomplished by fostering interest in, and understanding of, cultures and peoples, and by developing student proficiency in the fundamental language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the languages offered.
