The Department of English at UIC is the largest humanities unit in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Not only do we graduate the largest numbers of humanities majors and run one of the largest graduate programs, but we are also responsible for the First-Year Writing Program, which serves almost every undergraduate student across the colleges at UIC. Whether you are considering majoring or minoring in English or browsing graduate programs

Mission Statement

In conjunction with the broader mission statement of UIC, which emphasizes research, public service, social justice, and global consciousness, the English Department takes seriously its responsibility of directing the benefits of outstanding writing achievement and scholarly research toward the education of one of the most diverse, urban student bodies in the country. Driven by a deep care for learning in our discipline, we seek:

To support outstanding research and writing across diverse fields and interests To help students from diverse backgrounds become critically-engaged readers and informed writers To generate a profound sense of the contributions and benefits of humanistic learning and understanding for our society and to promote literacy and the use of imagination as crucial tools for meeting the challenges of twenty-first century life To prepare undergraduate students for a variety of careers in which the use of rhetorical and narrative techniques, the careful deployment of language, and the ability to analyze bits and bodies of writing are highly valued and in high demand To prepare our graduate students for careers in research and teaching as well as for career paths in the public and engaged humanities

English language requirements: TOEFL iBT score 80; TOEFL PBT score 550; IELTS Academic overall score 6.5; Listening, Writing, Reading, Speaking score 6; PTE Academic overall score 54 Listening 47, Writing 56, Reading 51, Speaking 53.
