The Online Master of Arts in Art Education program at Ohio State is geared toward art educators who want to change their thinking and the world through art-making and education. Through our program, you will think differently about what art education is and what art educators do. You will make new connections – between students and faculty, between art-making and teaching, between research and practice. You will redefine your practice as you expand art education beyond the classroom walls and even globally.
The Online Master of Arts in Art Education program is a 30-hour comprehensive program that is completed in two years. The curriculum focuses on meaning-making, critical thinking and reflective practice. Beginning the first summer, students take one 3-credit hour class and one 1-credit hour non-thesis hours each semester. The second summer, students choose two 3-credit hour elective courses and/or study abroad in order to tailor their studies to their interests and take advantage of faculty expertise. By the end of the program, students will have created a reflective portfolio on their teaching practice.
Students are expected to develop an individualized program of study in consultation with a faculty advisor. It must include a reasonable concentration in a single area, be approved by the advisor, and be within the rules of the Graduate Studies Committee and the Graduate School. The program consists of a coherent pattern of courses and other educational experiences, either a research thesis or a final project, and a final oral examination. The in person program admits students to start in autumn, spring, or summer terms.
