Strategic Project Management at Heriot-Watt University differentiates itself from other project management programmes by putting a greater emphasis on the strategic requirement in managing a portfolio of projects to deliver organisational goals.

In this way, Strategic Project Management encompasses both project management as a process to deliver end products and change management as a process to capture the rational and emotional buy-in of the people affected by change to ensure its success. A postgraduate qualification in Strategic Project Management can benefit individuals in business, engineering, IT or science whose job involves managing or directing work that has a strategic focus and a defined end goal.

This programme reflects the content of the Project Management Institute’s Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge.

Students will study 8 key themes, which are:

Strategic Project Management (Semester 1) Business Models: Themes & Issues (Semester 1) Strategic Change (Semester 1) Leadership (Semester 1) Research Philosophy & Practice (Semester 2) Quality Management and Engineering (Semester 2) Project Management (Semester 2) Leadership and Organisational Performance Dissertation (Semester 3)

Optional taught courses include:

Systems Thinking and Analysis Demand and Inventory Planning Human Resource Management Finance International Marketing

In addition to these taught courses, students pursuing the Masters qualification undertake a dissertation/research project.

Graduates who have achieved this degree over the past eight years have reported a significant impact on their career development. Project management opportunities include those in financial services, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and construction. Graduates may also progress to portfolio management, event management and change management roles.
